In a historical monument like Saint Jean, highly symbolic of a community as a whole, all sorts of events have occurred over the centuries.. The author has lent his imagination to some of those who witnessed the development of the Cathedral and its vicinity, from its reconstruction at the beginning of the 12th century to its role today. Here are the accounts of Guichard, the late 12th century archbishop and builder, Arnoud de Collonges, the Dean of the canonsâ chapter during the Ecumenical Council of 1245, Henriet de Nivelle, the master glazier who completed the new rose window on the West front in 1393, Giovanna Albizzi, a member of the Florentine oligarchy, severely shaken by the ravages of the religious wars, Antoine Bellet, the cityâs consul at the time of the Jubilee of Saint John in 1666 and Joseph Fesch, the first archbishop to be appointed following the turmoil of the French revolution. Men and women of their time, they relate their thoughts and feelings during one of the key moments in the history of the Cathedral and of the city of Lyon. Art historian Claudio Galleri is conservator of the print collection in the Municipal Library of Lyon. He also worked for an extended period for the Italian national monuments record. He has published numerous articles, monographs on artists, and two routes for a guide to Lyon on foot, Le Piéton de Lyon.
